Giving Pakistani Children an Identity Using Smartphones

0904

"For those who without an identity, life is a struggle."

How can mobile technology play a vital part in Reducing Inequalities? A child without an identity gets easily exposed to underage labour, trafficking, child marriage as well as no access to education and healthcare system. Formal birth registration is notoriously low in Pakistan, with an estimated 60 million children living without official registration.

Telenor Pakistan's Digital Birth Registration using the app enables these "invisible" children to prove their identities.Registration takes place either through door-to-door registration drives, or a family can alternatively approach a Digital Birth Registration franchise, where a nominated facilitator registers the child using the app and submits the registration to the relevant authorities. Once the registration is approved, the family will receive an official birth certificate. Using the data collected from the programme, stakeholders can also identify the most critical areas, and use a more targeted approach to door-to-door registrations.

Telenor group has been a Participant of the UN Global Compact since 2001.
