General Meeting 2018

 

A general meeting for all the GCNSL members was held on the 31st of July 2018. The meeting took place at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo.

 

The meeting began with an introduction by Dilhan C. Fernando, Chairman of the UN Global Compact Local Network Sri Lanka. He discussed the Ten Principles of the UNGC that are based on Human Rights, Labour, Environment and Anti-corruption. He continued to discuss reasons for revitalising the local network and made a business case for sustainability.

He then went off to introduce the board members and the steering committee as well as the companies that they represent.

 

Azam Bakeer Markar, the Network Representative, discussed the role of the UNGC and emphasized that the UNGC guides businesses towards achieving sustainability. He spoke about the different levels of engagement that companies can choose to have and also presented details of the annual financial contributions expected from companies.

 

Q&A session

 

There was a discussion on how companies can collaborate and share best and leading practices with each other. A member proposed meeting up more regularly in order to educate and increase awareness of the Ten Principles and the Sustainable Development Goals among the UNGC members. Therefore, the possibility of workshops was discussed. The possibility of particular companies or people championing certain causes in thematic areas was also mentioned.
